Patna, August 2: The Congress party has intensified its investigation into police actions and alleged human rights violations during the recent student protests in Bihar. Kanhaiya Kumar, the national in-charge of the NSUI, announced on Sunday that a fact-finding committee formed by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has begun its inquiry across various districts, including Patna. The committee is gathering evidence by interviewing students, parents, teachers, lawyers, journalists, and other stakeholders.
Kumar emphasized that the committee’s goal is not to make political accusations but to conduct an impartial investigation based on facts and evidence to uncover the truth. He noted that the committee is specifically examining police actions during the student protests on July 22 and 25. This includes assessing how many students were detained, how many were arrested, the charges filed against them, and the adherence to legal protocols throughout the process.
He alleged that brutal actions were taken against students peacefully protesting against question paper leaks and irregularities in the education system. Many students have reported illegal detention, mental harassment, and violations of their legal rights to the committee. Kumar also raised serious concerns regarding the treatment of minor students during these incidents.
During a press conference, Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar demanded that the government clarify who issued the orders for baton charges, tear gas, and the use of force against students. He stated that if the government intends to withdraw cases against the protesters, mere announcements are insufficient; accountability for responsible officials must also be established.
Kumar pointed out that the youth of the nation is increasingly questioning why question paper leaks continue to occur in competitive exams and why the credibility of the education system is under scrutiny. He argued that attempts to silence student voices are not in line with democratic values. The committee will compile a comprehensive report based on all documents, FIRs, victim statements, and other available evidence, which will be submitted to the AICC. If necessary, this report will also be used to seek justice in higher courts and other legal forums.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Jayavardhan Singh stated that the investigation is not limited to Patna but will also cover incidents in Jehanabad, Gaya, Siwan, and other districts. He accused authorities of using excessive force against peaceful protesters and failing to treat minors in accordance with the law.
