Congress Faces Major Setback in Assam as Over 100 Members Join AGP

Guwahati, March 26: The Congress party has suffered a significant blow ahead of the upcoming elections in Assam. More than 100 party workers, including close associates of state Congress president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, have defected to the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP).

Among those switching allegiance is Pinku Kalita, the president of the Kaliabor Youth Congress, whose move is seen as pivotal in regional politics. Kalita joined AGP along with his supporters, in the presence of senior state leader and minister Keshav Mahanta.

Mahanta welcomed the new members, stating that their inclusion would strengthen the party’s base in Kaliabor. He noted that the shift of Congress workers to AGP reflects the changing political landscape in the region.

Sources indicate that local Congress workers were dissatisfied with the party’s decision to allocate the Kaliabor seat to its ally, Raijor Dal. This discontent led several leaders and workers to leave the party.

Kalita explained that his decision was made in the interest of the people of Kaliabor. He accused the Congress leadership of neglecting the sentiments of grassroots workers and supporters.

He further stated that as part of the NDA, AGP is committed to safeguarding Assam’s interests and promoting the state’s development.

This development could significantly impact Kaliabor’s political dynamics, which has traditionally been a stronghold for Congress. As elections approach, party-switching and political alliances in Assam are rapidly evolving.
