Dehradun, May 12: Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Harish Rawat, sharply criticized Prime Minister Modi’s recent appeal urging citizens to avoid foreign travel and reduce gold purchases for a year.
Rawat accused the central government’s economic policies of exacerbating inflation and burdening the common people. He called for the government to issue a clear Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to dispel confusion among the public.
Speaking to reporters, Rawat expressed concern that the promises made before elections are nowhere to be seen, and the rising prices are impacting the general populace. He noted that the government is merely making appeals while the economic situation is already dire, with potential for further deterioration.
He also mocked the Prime Minister’s relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that the current inflation and various global issues stem from Trump’s influence. Rawat emphasized that India has not been able to play the global role it is capable of.
While he acknowledged that national appeals are acceptable, he stressed that policies must also be effective. Rawat accused the government of discriminating against states in the distribution of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas. He asserted that it is the opposition’s responsibility to monitor government policies and oppose decisions they deem incorrect.
He claimed that anyone who speaks out against such inequalities is often accused of being anti-national. He reiterated the need for the government to issue a clear SOP to prevent fear and confusion among the public.
Rawat stated that while Congress will cooperate with the government on national interest matters, it will continue to play a strong opposition role.
Uttarakhand Minister Ganesh Joshi supported the Prime Minister’s appeal, announcing his own decision to reduce car usage for local tasks. He mentioned that he plans to use his scooter for local errands, such as going home.
In response to Joshi’s statement, Rawat quipped that he hopes others will follow suit but should pray for the safety of the scooter Joshi rides.
