New Delhi, March 23: The Congress party launched a sharp attack on Monday following AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi’s announcement that his party will ally with the newly formed Aam Janata Unnayan Party, led by former Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir, for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. Congress stated, “Thank you, Owaisi. You have removed your mask of secularism and revealed your true communal face to the world.”
The Congress accused Owaisi of proving himself not only as the BJP’s “B-team” but also as its “true ally.”
In a conversation, Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput criticized the AIMIM-AJUP alliance, saying, “Thank you, Asaduddin Owaisi. You have shown your real communal face.” He added, “You have demonstrated that you are not just the BJP’s B-team, but also its true partner. People are accusing Humayun Kabir of taking money to form a party. Are you receiving funds from Delhi? The public understands everything, and they will show you your position in both the West Bengal and Hyderabad elections.”
Congress MP Sukdev Bhagat also weighed in, stating, “Whenever secular votes are divided, it ultimately benefits the BJP. Owaisi is known for this, and he often faces such accusations. He certainly adopts strategies that lead to vote splitting. That’s why we say he operates as the BJP’s B-team.”
JMM spokesperson Manoj Pandey added, “I believe Owaisi has had some success in one or two states. He has strengthened the BJP and weakened secular parties, boosting their morale. In the context of Bengal politics, I don’t think he fits in anywhere.”
JD(U) national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan also took a jab, stating, “Whether it’s Humayun Kabir or Owaisi, the truth is that the poison Mamata Banerjee has sown in West Bengal politics has created many characters who are only amplifying that poison. When a natural alternative exists, such elements will hold no significance, and their existence will not matter in these elections.”
Meanwhile, Bihar Minister Ramkripal Yadav offered a relatively balanced response, saying, “This is Owaisi’s party, and if he is preparing to contest elections, that is his independent decision. The party wants to expand its organization and has a presence in many places. Owaisi has decided to contest elections, and as a democratic party, its leaders operate accordingly.”
Voting for the 294-member Bengal Assembly will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
The AIMIM-AJUP alliance could influence the vote share in Muslim-majority seats in the upcoming elections, which are primarily viewed as a direct contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP.
