Congress Clarifies Stance on No-Confidence Motion Against Lok Sabha Speaker

New Delhi, February 10: The Congress party has clarified its position regarding a potential no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. On Tuesday, the party stated that if such a step is taken, it will be announced formally and constitutionally. Congress emphasized that until the no-confidence motion is officially presented, it will not respond to any speculation.

In response to this issue, Congress Rajya Sabha member Pramod Tiwari noted that the procedure for introducing a no-confidence motion is clearly outlined in the Constitution. He stated, “As soon as the no-confidence motion is presented under the Constitution, we will announce it publicly. Until there is a formal declaration, I cannot comment on any speculations or expectations.”

However, sources indicate that Congress may soon submit a notice for the no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla to the Lok Sabha Secretary-General. This development comes amid escalating tensions between the ruling party and the opposition during the current session of Parliament, characterized by repeated disruptions, heated debates, and interruptions.

Opposition parties associated with the INDIA bloc are seriously considering this move. They accuse the Lok Sabha Speaker of bias, claiming he denied opposition leader Rahul Gandhi the opportunity to speak during the discussion on the President’s address. The opposition argues that this undermines parliamentary traditions and democratic values.

Congress MP Sukdev Bhagat also weighed in on the matter, asserting that the opposition’s objections are not personal but are related to justice and adherence to the Constitution. He alleged, “I have made it clear that this is not a security issue. The fear stems from Rahul Gandhi’s statements. The intent to silence him is evident.”

He further stated, “If we are discussing a no-confidence motion, it is not against an individual. We simply seek fairness and integrity. The position of the Speaker is constitutional and should operate according to the Constitution, not at the government’s behest.”

According to opposition leaders, the reasons for bringing the motion include the suspension of eight opposition MPs, inaction against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for allegedly offensive remarks about former Prime Ministers, and unfounded accusations against women Congress MPs.
