Complications Following C-Section in Jodhpur Lead to Suspension of 25 Medications

Jodhpur, June 23: Serious complications have arisen in eight women following childbirth at the Paota District Hospital in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. In response, health officials have suspended the use of 25 medications and one injection.

Samples of all medications and consumables used in the affected cases have been collected and sent for laboratory testing. Authorities have instructed that these products should not be used until the test results are received.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the women were administered intravenous (IV) sodium lactate injections. According to hospital officials, the relevant batch arrived a week prior to the incident and was being used for the first time.

As a precaution, the medical department has immediately halted the use of all injections from this batch until the investigation concludes. A probe at the medical college level has commenced, and a team from AIIMS will conduct an independent investigation into the incident.

The affected women underwent cesarean deliveries on June 20 at the Paota District Hospital. Shortly after surgery, several patients developed severe complications, necessitating emergency medical assistance.

District Collector Alok Ranjan visited the hospital’s pharmacy and chaired a review meeting with senior health officials, including Dr. B.S. Jodha, Principal of Dr. S.N. Medical College, Dr. Kulbir Chopra, PMO of Paota District Hospital, Dr. Vikas Rajpurohit, Superintendent of MDM Hospital, and Dr. S.S. Shekhawat, CMHO.

Dr. Kulbir Chopra explained that sodium lactate IV fluids are regularly administered before and after cesarean deliveries and are commonly used during surgical procedures. He also noted that all other medications and treatment protocols provided to patients were standard and had not changed.

According to hospital officials, the condition of six of the affected women is currently stable, showing signs of improvement. However, two patients, Lalita and Sonal, developed severe complications, including kidney failure, and required dialysis. Both have been referred to AIIMS for specialized care.

Family members of the affected women have demanded a thorough investigation, alleging that patients faced severe complications, including excessive bleeding and reduced urine output immediately after delivery.

Hospital officials confirmed that surgical procedures at Paota District Hospital will remain suspended until reports regarding medications, consumables, and the operating theater environment are received. Patients requiring surgery are being referred to Mathuradas Mathur Hospital.

Authorities have stated that the exact cause of the complications will be determined.
