Rome, May 9: Coco Gauff has secured her place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 Italian Open. The 22-year-old American player overcame a slow start and a tough challenge in the third set against Argentina’s Solana Sierra, winning 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 on Saturday.
The match, held on the clay courts of Foro Italico, lasted 2 hours and 10 minutes. Gauff, the third seed, faced a strong challenge from world number 72 Sierra in a tense third-round encounter. After losing the first set, Gauff dominated the second set, not allowing Sierra to win a single game. She then made a remarkable comeback in the decisive set to keep her campaign alive in Rome.
Gauff started strong, taking a 2-0 lead in the first set, but Sierra mounted a fierce comeback. The Argentine player secured a crucial break in the 11th game and held her serve to claim the first set 7-5. Disappointed with her performance, Gauff lightly tapped her racket against her head after losing the set.
This “reset” proved to be immediate and effective. Gauff maintained complete control throughout the second set, winning it without dropping a game and overpowering Sierra with aggressive returning.
However, the third and final set brought new drama. Sierra took a 3-0 lead after breaking Gauff’s serve twice in a row. It seemed she might pull off a significant upset, but the reigning French Open champion Gauff won five consecutive games to turn the match around and get close to victory.
When Gauff failed to convert a match point while serving at 5-3, Sierra managed to break back again. Nevertheless, Gauff regained control, broke Sierra’s serve once more, and clinched the match on her third match point.
With this victory, Gauff recorded her 19th match win in Rome, the highest for any non-Grand Slam event. To reach the quarter-finals, Gauff will face the winner of the match between 16th seed Eva Jovic and fellow American Taylor Townsend.
