Political Tensions Rise Over Yamuna Water Agreement in Rajasthan

Jaipur, June 25: Political tensions are escalating in Rajasthan regarding the Yamuna water agreement. A verbal clash has erupted between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress over who deserves credit for bringing Yamuna water to the drought-affected Shekhawati region.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot challenged the BJP government to provide water on the ground instead of merely signing agreements. Meanwhile, Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra labeled the latest agreement as a “false memorandum of understanding.”

In response, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma accused Congress of misleading the public and questioned their moral authority to comment on development. He stated, “Congress leaders lack even a basic understanding of concepts like memorandums of understanding and contracts. Their understanding and vision are incomplete, which is why the party’s image has deteriorated nationwide.”

Referring to the Yamuna water agreement and the Kisaau dam project, he emphasized that historic measures are being taken under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership to ensure water availability in the state.

CM Sharma urged Congress to account for its five years in power before evaluating the BJP government’s performance over the past two and a half years. He accused the previous Congress administration of plunging Rajasthan into an electricity crisis, failing to prevent leaks of important documents, and not completing major water projects despite years in power.

He asserted, “Before assessing our government’s actions, Congress must explain what it achieved during its five years. We have delivered results in employment, electricity supply, and water infrastructure in a short time, which Congress failed to achieve throughout its tenure.”

Sharma claimed, “Congress has jeopardized the future of millions of youth through exam paper leaks and recruitment scams. In contrast, not a single recruitment exam paper has leaked during our administration.”

He further stated that the BJP government has provided job opportunities transparently, making merit-based recruitment a hallmark of the current administration.

The Chief Minister also criticized the previous government for its management of electricity, alleging that Rajasthan faced an unprecedented power crisis during Congress’s rule. He highlighted that the BJP government is committed to providing uninterrupted electricity to villages and cities, with daytime electricity already being supplied to farmers in 26 districts. The government aims to extend this service across Rajasthan by 2027.

Defending the Yamuna water project amid opposition criticism, Sharma accused Congress leaders of creating confusion for political gain. He assured that Rajasthan’s interests are being safeguarded through continuous communication with the central government, and initiatives like the Yamuna water agreement and Kisaau dam project will significantly enhance the state’s water security.

He reiterated that historic decisions are being made under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership to ensure Rajasthan receives its fair share of water.

These remarks followed Ashok Gehlot’s challenge to the BJP government to convert agreements into actual water supply. Speaking in Jodhpur, Gehlot stated that if Yamuna water truly reaches Neem Ka Thana, he would personally visit the Chief Minister’s residence to pay his respects.

Gehlot remarked, “Water will not come merely from meetings. Bring the water, and I will personally congratulate the Chief Minister.”

Dotasra also questioned the agreement, alleging that Rajasthan’s interests have been compromised and described the BJP government’s approach as merely a formality rather than a solid solution.

In a social media post, Dotasra claimed that the people of Shekhawati need water, not paperwork, and demanded clarity on how and when the project will be implemented.

Sharma concluded by stating that Congress has failed not only in governance but also in playing a constructive opposition role. He emphasized, “A strong opposition is essential for democracy, but Congress has completely failed to fulfill this responsibility. Instead of offering constructive suggestions, it is mired in appeasement and misinformation politics.”

He stressed that the BJP government is focused on development, infrastructure building, and fulfilling promises made to the people of Rajasthan.
