Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate the first phase of the government’s ambitious laptop distribution programme on Monday. Under this phase, 10 lakh laptops will be handed out to college students across the state, marking a significant step towards digital empowerment in higher education.
The inauguration event will take place at 3 pm at the Chennai Trade Centre. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will also participate in the programme.
According to an official statement from the Tamil Nadu government, this initiative reflects the DMK government’s strong focus on student welfare and inclusive development. Since taking office, the Stalin-led government has launched several education-focused schemes, including the Tamil Puthalvan scheme, Innovative Women scheme, First-Generation Graduate scheme, Post-Matric Scholarship programme, and Social Justice hostels. These efforts aim to increase access to education and reduce socio-economic barriers.
Continuing these efforts, the Chief Minister announced the distribution of 20 lakh laptops to college students in two phases. The objective is to equip students with essential digital skills required in today’s technology-driven world.
The laptops will be provided to students studying in government engineering colleges, arts and science colleges, medical, agricultural and law institutions, polytechnics, and industrial training institutes. The first phase is expected to benefit a total of 10 lakh students from these institutions.
The government is distributing laptops from leading global brands such as Dell, Acer, and HP. Each device comes with an Intel i3 processor, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD storage, Windows 11 Home operating system, MS Office 365 software, and a high-quality laptop bag.
Officials stated that this initiative will significantly enhance students’ digital capabilities and improve their employment prospects. Access to modern technology will enable students to explore opportunities in emerging fields such as information technology, software development, data entry, digital marketing, graphic design, coding, web design, and artificial intelligence.
The government also mentioned that this scheme will help increase household incomes, reduce the digital divide between rural and urban areas, and open pathways for technology-based entrepreneurship.
