Mumbai: Actress Chitrangda Singh has raised concerns over the long working hours faced by technical staff and crew members on film sets. While actors and producers often receive recognition for a project’s success, the hardworking teams behind the scenes—such as lighting, art, camera, and set workers—rarely get attention for their efforts or the time they invest.
Chitrangda emphasised the importance of regulating shift timings on film sets for the mental and physical well-being of everyone involved. She noted that actors usually receive special consideration, with producers and directors scheduling shoots to suit their convenience and comfort, ensuring their creative performance is not affected.
However, she pointed out that compared to actors, technical staff and set workers endure much longer hours. While actors may arrive by 7 am for shoots starting at 9 am, crew members often begin work as early as 5 or 5:30 am and are the last to leave the set. Their extended workdays often go unnoticed.
Chitrangda also mentioned that long commutes and limited transportation options add to the crew’s exhaustion, sometimes leaving them fatigued enough to fall asleep during shoots. Regular and regulated shift timings, she said, are essential not only for the health of the crew but also for the overall success of the production.
The actress urged actors to take the lead in advocating for better working hours for the entire crew. Such collective action could bring positive change to the industry, elevating respect for all workers and addressing this common concern.
Addressing concerns that fixed working hours might hinder creativity, Chitrangda rejected this notion. She explained that proper rest and regular schedules would enhance efficiency and improve the quality of work and creativity.
