Beijing, March 6: On March 4, Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the need for the international community to firmly oppose any form of selective approaches and double standards regarding terrorism. This statement was made during a briefing on the implementation of the UN’s global counter-terrorism strategy.
Fu highlighted the necessity of addressing the root causes of terrorism, which include reducing conflict and poverty, as well as promoting the diversity of various civilizations and mutual respect.
He noted that the UN’s global counter-terrorism strategy, adopted nearly 20 years ago, has played a significant and positive role in preventing and combating terrorism, enhancing member states’ counter-terrorism capabilities, and advancing international cooperation. Fu clarified that China supports the UN’s central coordinating role in counter-terrorism efforts.
Furthermore, he pointed out that terrorism is increasingly linked to various complex factors, including armed conflict, international organized crime, social inequality, and the misuse of emerging technologies. The international community should view the ninth review of the UN’s global counter-terrorism strategy as an important opportunity.
Fu also stressed the importance of deepening cooperation with African nations and regional organizations like the African Union to effectively assist Africa in strengthening its counter-terrorism capabilities.
