Colombo, March 5: A recent report highlights a strategic effort by China to systematically undermine Buddhist values in Sri Lanka while deeply embedding the agenda of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This initiative, which appears to be cultural diplomacy, is, in reality, an ideological infiltration. Sri Lanka must tread carefully to avoid jeopardizing its centuries-old Buddhist heritage in exchange for economic dependency.
According to a report by Sri Lankan media outlet Ceylon Wire News, “Sri Lanka, long revered as the birthplace of Theravada Buddhism, now faces a subtle yet profound loss of its religious and cultural identity. At the heart of this transformation is China’s use of Buddhism as a soft power tool, intricately linked to its broader Communist Party strategy. While Beijing presents its approach in terms of friendship and shared heritage, the reality conceals ideological infiltration and cultural manipulation.”
The report notes that China has long recognized religion as a tool of diplomacy. In Sri Lanka, where Buddhism has deep spiritual roots, this becomes a natural entry point for Beijing. China sponsors the reconstruction of temples, cultural exchanges, and pilgrimages, positioning itself as a guardian of Buddhist heritage.
However, behind this facade lies a calculated effort to align Sri Lanka’s Buddhist institutions with the worldview of the CCP. Scholars have pointed out that China’s Buddhist diplomacy is not limited to cultural parity; it is a necessity of CCP foreign policy aimed at softening its image while strengthening party-to-party relations alongside state-to-state ties.
The report states, “Due to costly infrastructure projects like the Hambantota Port, Sri Lanka struggles to repay loans, leading to concessions that deepen Chinese control. Recently, agreements have progressed beyond bricks and mortar, clearly linking Sri Lanka’s digital economy plan to Chinese investment. This is not merely about financial assistance; it involves integrating the ideological framework of the CCP into the governance of the country.”
Furthermore, the report warns that by linking economic cooperation to the CCP’s narrative of collective prosperity and obedience, Beijing ensures that its political agenda penetrates deeply into Sri Lankan institutions. This dual approach of economic grip and Buddhist soft power reshapes spiritual narratives to align with its authoritarian perspective. Together, physical and spiritual dependencies create a dual front of influence that weakens Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and gradually redefines its cultural identity.
The report cautions that if this ideological infiltration is not halted, it could undermine centuries-old spiritual heritage and turn “Sri Lanka’s Buddhist institutions into instruments of foreign propaganda, rather than allowing them to remain guardians of eternal wisdom.”
