Beijing, April 15: China has dedicated significant attention to technological advancements over the past few years, positioning itself as a global leader across various sectors. In the realm of space computing, the country is actively working on formulating a policy to foster its development.
Experts suggest that this strategic move could revolutionize how data is processed in orbit, thereby strengthening China’s position in the global tech race.
Space computing refers to utilizing computing capabilities in orbit, enabling satellite networks to achieve seamless global coverage.
Officials linked to the relevant policy state that traditional satellites function merely as cameras, capturing data and sending vast amounts of unverified information to ground stations for processing. In contrast, space computing involves satellites equipped with onboard servers, artificial intelligence chips, and storage devices, which are considered highly advanced.
This technology allows satellites to collect and analyze data, making real-time decisions that reduce data processing time from several hours to mere seconds. Additionally, it addresses the energy and space limitations faced by ground-based data centers.
According to Chao Qi, Deputy Director of the Information and Technology Development Department at China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, space computing offers benefits such as real-time in-orbit processing, cost-effective energy supply, and extensive coverage compared to ground-based data centers.
Moreover, these features will enhance the utilization of space energy and improve global coverage and anti-jamming capabilities. This indicates the strategic importance and promising industrial potential of this emerging sector.
It has been stated that this will strengthen systematic planning and ensure a serious approach to advancing the space computing industry in a solid and organized manner.
Market research firm BIS Research projects that the global in-orbit data center market is expected to reach $39.9 billion by 2035, with an annual growth rate of 67.4%.
In recent decades, China has rapidly embraced technology and innovation, which is why it continues to play a decisive role in this direction.
