
New York, April 15: A grand cultural event was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday to celebrate the 17th Chinese Language Day. The event was jointly organized by the Permanent Mission of China to the UN and China Media Group (CMG).
During the celebration, Fu Tsong, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted that this year marks the 55th anniversary of China’s rightful seat at the United Nations. He noted that the Chinese language has played a significant role in the development of the UN and in fostering cooperation between China and the organization.
Fu emphasized the growing popularity of the Chinese language, Chinese studies, and interest in China in recent years. Experiencing Chinese culture and traveling to China have become new trends.
In a video message, CMG Director-General Shan Haixiong remarked that the Chinese language embodies 5,000 years of civilization. He pointed out that it is now part of the national education systems of 90 countries. Shan reaffirmed CMG’s commitment to promoting Chinese culture and facilitating exchanges between civilizations.
Melissa Fleming, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, along with several UN officials, underscored the importance of linguistic diversity and multilingualism. They praised the contributions of Chinese language teams at the UN.
The event featured the screening of the AI short film “Shwo Wan Chye Ji,” produced by CMG. Additionally, a creative collection of short videos titled “Learn Chinese” and winning entries from the global AI film and video collection were showcased.
UN staff members discussed the use and promotion of the Chinese language, emphasizing its vital role in enhancing mutual learning and understanding among civilizations.
