Islamabad, April 15: Recent talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad did not yield the expected results. However, the need to advance the peace process through other means for lasting and just peace in the Persian Gulf remains critical, according to a report.
The report cites observers who noted that Pakistan’s role in the peace process has been more of a ‘facilitator’ rather than a ‘mediator.’ A mediator actively guides both parties toward a shared solution, while a facilitator merely assists in the exchange of messages and information between them.
An article published by the Politia Research Foundation highlights that the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, which began on February 28, has significantly impacted the global economy. Iran’s disruption of oil and goods supply in the Strait of Hormuz has led many countries to face energy crises. During this period, Iran suffered substantial casualties, while several Gulf nations experienced attacks on civilian infrastructure and energy facilities.
According to the report, the ceasefire on April 7, 2026, and the subsequent peace talks have raised hopes for lasting peace in the region. Global media and discussions in India have focused on Pakistan emerging as a platform for these talks. However, the report states that due to specific geopolitical circumstances, the US and Iran opted for Pakistan as a facilitator.
Sanjay Pulipaka, the author of the report and chairperson of the Politia Research Foundation, emphasized the critical importance of the Strait of Hormuz for India’s economy. If India were to take on a mediating role, it would involve active intervention, emphasizing the need to keep maritime routes open for all developing nations. This is why New Delhi was not chosen as the primary mediator in the current situation.
The report also indicates that the US has been strengthening its ties with Pakistan in recent months, which could be part of its strategy in the event of potential conflict with Iran.
Additionally, considering the tensions in transatlantic relations, the involvement of Gulf countries, and Pakistan’s extensive experience in advancing US interests in the region, Islamabad was deemed a suitable platform for the talks.
The report raises concerns that the international community has not adequately addressed Pakistan’s military actions in Afghanistan, which have resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties due to the ongoing conflict with Iran. There are fears that discussions surrounding the peace talks in Islamabad may overshadow violent activities by Pakistan in neighboring regions.
