Beijing, March 3: According to recent data from China’s National Energy Administration, the country’s total installed renewable energy capacity reached 2.34 billion kilowatts by the end of 2025. During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period (2021-2025), China developed the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system, with the share of renewable energy increasing from 40% to nearly 60%.
Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that energy security is linked to economic and social development, urging the need to seize opportunities for high-quality development of new energy.
In 2025, the renewable energy sector in China witnessed unprecedented growth in three key areas. The combined installed capacity of wind and solar energy historically surpassed thermal power, rising from 530 million kilowatts in 2020 to 1.84 billion kilowatts in 2025. The new energy storage capacity also crossed the historic milestone of 100 million kilowatts, accounting for over 40% of the global total. The annual trade of renewable energy green certificates exceeded the totals of previous years.
During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, significant advancements in new energy were observed. Large wind and solar energy bases were established in desert regions, contributing over 130 million kilowatts of new capacity. Currently, green electricity accounts for approximately 40% of China’s total electricity consumption. Additionally, China has promoted the use of green vehicles and green electricity, leading to the establishment of the world’s largest electric vehicle charging network. Continuous improvements in the green certificate and green electricity trading mechanisms have further increased the demand for green electricity.
With the construction of the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system, China has made a significant contribution to the global clean energy transition. During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, the wind and solar products exported by China helped reduce carbon emissions by approximately 4.1 billion tons in other countries.
