Chennai to Establish 12 Mini Taluk Offices for Faster Citizen Services

Chennai, August 2: The Tamil Nadu government is set to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of revenue services by establishing 12 mini taluk offices in Chennai. These offices will feature dedicated e-service centers where applications for various revenue certificates will be accepted.

According to officials from the revenue department, a formal announcement regarding this proposal is expected during the upcoming session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The initiative aims to reduce delays in the current taluk offices and alleviate their workload.

The mini taluk offices will operate within the jurisdiction of existing taluks in Chennai, focusing exclusively on certificate-related services. Residents will be able to apply for community, income, nativity, widow, legal heir, and residence certificates without needing to visit the main taluk office. Currently, Chennai has 16 taluk offices handling a variety of revenue administration tasks.

Under this proposed pilot project, 12 locations have been selected to open mini offices, making frequently requested revenue certificates readily available. These offices will be established in Kodungaiyur, Erukkancheri, Porur, Mogappair, Korattur, Saligramam, Neelankarai, Pallikaranai, Sholinganallur, Tiruvanmiyur/ Besant Nagar, Triplicane (Thiruvallikkeni), and Manapakkam.

Officials from the revenue department indicated that a deputy tahsildar from the headquarters will oversee these mini taluk offices. Each center will also have a special e-service facility, allowing residents to apply for certificate-related services close to their locality and benefit from the services offered.

This initiative was first conceived during the previous DMK government, prompted by concerns over the increasing workload in Chennai’s taluk offices and the time taken to process applications. Subsequently, the Chennai Collectorate identified suitable locations for these centers.

As part of efforts to improve the system further, the revenue department is considering granting signing authority for certain certificates to tahsildars involved in social security schemes. These officials currently manage old-age pensions and other welfare programs.

Officials believe that delegating responsibilities will lead to better distribution of tasks, reduce the burden on regular tahsildars, and expedite the processing of applications.

This initiative is a significant part of the state government’s efforts to decentralize revenue administration and make essential government services more accessible.

Officials are optimistic that if the mini taluk system proves successful in Chennai, it will reduce congestion in existing offices and decrease waiting times for citizens seeking certificates.
