
Chennai, March 16: In a significant operation, Chennai police have eliminated a wanted criminal named Thoppai Ganesh during an encounter near Madhavaram Roundtana. Ganesh was a suspect in a robbery case that occurred in Puzhal district. When police attempted to apprehend him, he attacked the officers and attempted to flee, prompting the police to fire in self-defense.
According to police reports, the robbery took place on January 30, 2026, around 5:40 AM at the residence of Vijaykumar in Mahavir Garden, Kuzhal Thirunilakandan Nagar, Puzhal. Six masked assailants entered the house through the back door and threatened the family with knives. They made off with ₹2.5 million in cash, approximately 15 gold ornaments, and a diamond earring.
During this incident, a woman named Vasant sustained minor injuries to her lip. Following a complaint at Puzhal police station, authorities formed a special team to apprehend the criminals. Based on fingerprint evidence and CCTV footage from the area, police identified Thoppai Ganesh’s involvement in the crime. Several individuals, including lawyers, were arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.
While searching for Ganesh, police located him on Monday morning near Madhavaram Roundtana and attempted to arrest him. However, he attacked the officers and tried to escape, leading to police firing that struck him.
Ganesh was promptly taken to Stanley Government Hospital in Chennai, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. His body has been retained at the hospital for further procedures.
Authorities revealed that Thoppai Ganesh faced numerous criminal charges, including murder, robbery, and attempted robbery, across 14 police stations, including Vyasarpadi, Madhavaram, Chitlapakkam, and Madipakkam.
Approximately a year ago, Ganesh and his accomplice Arivazhagan were arrested by Chennai police in connection with another case near Tiruttani. During that arrest, Arivazhagan was shot by police. After being released on bail, Ganesh went into hiding and later emerged as a suspect in the January 30 robbery case, which has already led to the arrest of over five individuals, including two lawyers.
