Mumbai, March 16: Many actors have emerged as saviors on the big screen, helping the underprivileged. However, one superstar from South India has given the gift of sight to four people, both in life and after his passing. We are talking about the legendary Puneeth Rajkumar, whose 51st birthday is celebrated on March 17.
Born in Chennai, Puneeth inherited the acting legacy from his father, a renowned actor in South India, while his mother produced several films. He made his cinematic debut at a young age, astonishing audiences with his talent. While many actors struggle for awards even after years of hard work, Puneeth garnered several accolades as a child artist. He debuted on screen in 1980.
His first appearance was in ‘Vasantha Geetha,’ followed by performances in ‘Bhagya Vanta,’ ‘Chalisuva Modagalu,’ ‘Eradu Nakshatragalu,’ and ‘Bettada Hoovu,’ winning hearts with his acting. Notably, he received the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for his role as Ramu in ‘Bettada Hoovu’ and the Karnataka State Child Artist Award for ‘Chalisuva Modagalu.’
Puneeth Rajkumar is among the megastars who worked not only in Kannada but also in Tamil and Telugu cinema. He starred in 29 films as the lead actor, with blockbusters like ‘Appu,’ ‘Veera Kannadiga,’ and ‘Abhi’ among his most successful projects, setting records for the highest fees received.
Interestingly, his mother played a significant role in his career, writing and producing stories for many films. Parvathamma Rajkumar produced successful films such as ‘Appu,’ ‘Jackie,’ ‘Anna Bond,’ and ‘Arasu,’ which were pivotal in Puneeth’s career. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 47.
Despite being fit, he succumbed to a heart attack, a fate his father, Dr. Rajkumar, also faced. In 1994, Dr. Rajkumar decided that the entire family would donate their eyes. Following Puneeth’s death, his corneas were donated within six hours, giving the gift of sight to four individuals.
