Chennai, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is urging property owners in the city to pay their outstanding and current property taxes by September 30. The corporation needs to collect a total of ₹847.80 crore in property taxes, a crucial amount given its increasing financial responsibilities.
Currently, 603,232 property owners in Chennai have not yet paid their taxes. This figure includes dues from previous years as well as taxes for the current assessment period. The GCC has assessed taxes on a total of 1,415,771 properties in the city. Among these, 812,539 property owners have settled their dues, leaving a significant number still pending.
In July, the corporation launched a special property tax collection campaign aimed at improving tax compliance and recovering overdue amounts. Despite these efforts, outstanding and current tax liabilities remain high, prompting the GCC to issue another appeal ahead of the September 30 deadline.
For the fiscal year 2026-27, the GCC has a total liability of ₹3,434.72 crore. Timely collection of property taxes is essential for funding services such as waste management, road construction, drainage systems, street lighting, and other public services.
GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran has called on property owners to cooperate by paying all outstanding taxes within the set deadline to ensure uninterrupted access to essential services for residents.
To facilitate tax payments, the corporation has introduced several online and digital options. Property owners can pay their taxes through the GCC’s official website and mobile app. Additionally, they can use WhatsApp payment links, QR codes on tax receipts, and the corporation’s WhatsApp chatbot for payments.
Residents can take advantage of the WhatsApp chatbot by contacting 9445161913. The GCC states that these digital options will eliminate the need for visits to offices, making the payment process more convenient.
The corporation advises taxpayers not to wait until the last day and to ensure that no old dues remain on their properties. Timely tax payments will strengthen the GCC’s financial capacity and accelerate development and civic services in Chennai.
