London, August 12: Premier League club Chelsea has announced the signing of Spanish player Pep Chavarria from La Liga team Rayo Vallecano. The 28-year-old has signed a five-year contract.
Chavarria has committed to Chelsea until 2031 and will begin working with his new teammates at Cobham. In an official statement, he expressed his excitement, saying, “I am thrilled to start with Chelsea. It feels like a dream for me, as Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world. This is a great opportunity, and I am ready to work hard to bring success to the team.”
He further added, “Many people have helped me reach this point, and I must thank my family. They have always supported me, and everything happening today is because of them.” Chavarria began his career with his hometown team, UE Figueres, which was then in the Spanish fourth tier. He made his senior debut at 18 against CF Peralada and developed into an attacking-minded left-back over the next two seasons.
In 2018, he signed with third-tier club UE Olot, quickly securing a spot in the starting lineup and becoming one of the division’s top players. After playing 52 matches for Olot, he moved to Real Zaragoza, then in the Spanish second tier, in August 2020. Chavarria made his professional debut the following month, starting in a 2-2 draw against Las Palmas.
Once again, he adapted to a new level. After signing with Rayo in August 2022, he spent two full seasons with Zaragoza before reaching the top league. Over the past four years, Chavarria has been a crucial part of the Rayo team, helping the club achieve historic milestones, including finishing eighth in La Liga for two consecutive seasons and reaching a European final.
Last season, he played 44 matches, contributing to Rayo’s qualification for the UEFA Conference League final, where they narrowly lost to Crystal Palace. Chelsea had a disappointing previous season, finishing in 10th place. The team will kick off its 2026-27 Premier League campaign against Fulham in a London derby on August 24.
