Central Government Takes Major Steps to Enhance Mental Health in Schools

New Delhi, June 5: In response to increasing competition, exam pressure, and changing lifestyles, the central government is set to take significant steps to strengthen the mental health of school students. Central Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan held a comprehensive review meeting with senior officials, committee members, and experts to discuss the proposed National Mental Health and Wellness Policy for schools.

During this review meeting, extensive discussions were held on measures to enhance the mental health and well-being of students, teachers, and the entire school community. It was emphasized that mental health should not be limited to solving problems; rather, a holistic and preventive approach is essential.

Minister Pradhan stressed the importance of creating a safe, inclusive, and collaborative environment in schools. He highlighted the need for a positive school culture that promotes mental health, empathy, care, trust, and emotional resilience.

He stated that mental health and wellness should be integral to school systems, processes, and implementations, forming a vital foundation for quality education. Pradhan made it clear that the emotional and mental development of students is just as crucial as their academic growth. Many experts and educators also suggested that the proposed policy should be based on Indian knowledge traditions, culture, and values, ensuring practical applicability in schools.

The Ministry of Education emphasized the development of teachers as primary guides for students. They believe that teachers play a crucial role in understanding students’ emotional needs and providing timely support. The aim of the proposed National Mental Health and Wellness Policy is to create an environment in schools where every student feels safe, respected, and empowered. This will enable students to thrive mentally and reach their full potential.
