Celebrating Nine Years of Phullu: Sharib Hashmi Reflects on Breaking Taboos Around Periods

Mumbai, June 16: Actor Sharib Hashmi recently took to social media to celebrate the ninth anniversary of his film ‘Phullu’. In his post, he shared unseen images from the film, showcasing various scenes and moments from the shooting process. He also reiterated the film’s important social message.

The images posted by Sharib on Instagram feature glimpses of village life and special moments spent with fellow cast members on set. In his caption, he wrote, “It’s been nine years since ‘Phullu’ was released. This was the first Hindi film that attempted to break the taboo surrounding periods and the associated social stigma. Being part of such a pioneering initiative fills me with pride, and this experience will always hold a special place in my career.”

Directed by Abhishek Saxena, ‘Phullu’ addresses a serious social issue against the backdrop of rural life. The film stars Sharib Hashmi alongside actress Jyoti Sethi in leading roles.

The story revolves around a simple rural man named Phullu (played by Sharib Hashmi), known for his innocence. He is popular among the women in his village for bringing essential supplies from the city. Despite being ridiculed by villagers for his nature, he continues to help everyone in his own way. His mother often scolds him, urging him to take on responsibilities, but Phullu’s life remains uncomplicated.

The narrative takes a turn when Phullu learns about menstrual hygiene in the city. He discovers that women in his village use old cloths, which adversely affects their health. This revelation transforms Phullu’s life as he decides to learn how to produce sanitary pads and make them available for the women in his village. He works in a factory in the city to gain knowledge before returning home.

Upon his return, Phullu faces numerous challenges. Many villagers doubt his intentions, and he often becomes the subject of ridicule. Nevertheless, he remains undeterred and continues to strive for women’s awareness and empowerment.
