Kolkata, February 17: Whistleblower Akhtar Ali, involved in financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, faces serious legal challenges as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) prepares to frame charges against him.

The CBI submitted an application to the Alipore CBI Court on Tuesday, which granted permission to proceed with the charges. According to the agency, charges against Akhtar Ali will be formally framed on February 25. The court has also mandated that Ali must be present on that day.

While the investigation was previously reported to be informally concluded, supplementary charge sheets indicate that the inquiry may continue if necessary. The CBI is currently awaiting forensic reports related to the case.

Notably, Akhtar Ali filed a case alleging financial corruption during the media coverage of a horrific rape and murder incident involving a junior trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He had petitioned for investigations against the then-principal, Sandeep Ghosh, involving both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Following this, the court ordered the CBI and ED to take over the investigation.

The CBI arrested Sandeep Ghosh and several business associates linked to him. However, the agency later claimed that Akhtar was also involved in the financial scam. Consequently, the CBI filed a charge sheet against him, stating that he had been summoned multiple times for questioning but failed to appear.

Additionally, the CBI accused Akhtar of seeking anticipatory bail in the Calcutta High Court under the pretext of illness. Following this, he was ordered to surrender, which he complied with, and was placed in judicial custody until February 17. He was presented in court again on Tuesday.

On that day, Akhtar did not apply for bail during the hearing. The court approved the CBI’s application to frame charges against him. Reports suggest that charges will also be framed against Shashikant Chandak alongside Akhtar Ali on February 25.

Furthermore, the supplementary charge sheet filed by the CBI indicates that the investigation process may advance in the coming days.
