CBI Achieves Major Success: Former Postal Officer Sentenced to Four Years for Bribery

Bhubaneswar, March 14: A special CBI court in Bhubaneswar has sentenced a former assistant superintendent of post offices in the Baripada area of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district to four years of rigorous imprisonment for demanding a bribe of ₹2 lakh. An official confirmed this information on Saturday.

The accused, Radha Krishna Sahu, was in charge of the Central Sub-Division in Baripada when he was found guilty. The court delivered its verdict on Friday.

The CBI registered the case against Sahu on February 4, 2014. He allegedly demanded ₹2 lakh from the complainant to facilitate his joining as a Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS), Mail Deliverer/ABPM, and Mail Carrier (MC) at the Debasol Branch Post Office.

According to the CBI, Sahu did not take any steps to assist the complainant in his joining and subsequently demanded ₹50,000 on February 3, 2014, as part of the total bribe. When the complainant expressed his inability to pay the full amount, Sahu agreed to accept the money in two installments, with ₹20,000 to be paid at his rented house in Baliganj on February 6, 2014.

The CBI set a trap and caught Sahu red-handed while he was demanding and accepting the ₹20,000 bribe from the complainant. Following the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against him on June 25, 2014. The trial lasted for 12 years, culminating in the federal agency securing a four-year prison sentence for the guilty party.

In a separate case, the CBI arrested Abhishek Sen Gupta, an assistant manager and loan officer at the Indian State Bank’s Gumi branch in Assam’s Kamrup (Rural) district. A statement released on Friday revealed that he was accused of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹16,000 from a complainant.

This case was registered on March 12 after a complaint alleged that Gupta sought an unjust benefit of ₹16,000 to process loan applications from customers seeking financial assistance for installing solar power on their rooftops.

The CBI confirmed the allegations and set a trap, catching Gupta red-handed while he was demanding and accepting the bribe from the complainant.
