Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Visits India, Highlights Economic Ties

Mumbai, February 28: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in India on Friday for a four-day visit. Upon landing in Mumbai, he described India as “the world’s fastest-growing major economy” and expressed a desire to establish partnerships that would create new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.

On the social media platform X, Carney stated, “India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy. I have just arrived in Mumbai, where I will meet with business leaders. We will forge partnerships that open new avenues for Canadian workers and businesses.”

Carney further noted that he was welcomed at the airport by Maharashtra’s Protocol and Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal. He emphasized that the India-Canada partnership is based on shared democratic values, strong people-to-people connections, and growing cooperation across various sectors.

Accompanied by his wife, Diana Fox Carney, this marks Carney’s first official visit to India as Prime Minister, running from February 27 to March 2. Upon arrival, he was greeted by Minister Rawal at the airport.

During his stay in Mumbai, Prime Minister Carney will participate in business events and meet with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry and finance experts, innovators, academics, and representatives from Canadian pension funds based in India.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, welcomed Carney on social media, stating, “We warmly welcome Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on his first official visit to India. This trip is a significant step towards strengthening India-Canada relations.”

After completing his engagements in Mumbai, Carney will travel to New Delhi on Sunday evening. On March 2, he will hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House.

The Ministry previously indicated that the two leaders would review the progress made in various areas of the India-Canada strategic partnership, based on their previous meetings in Kananaskis (June 2025) and Johannesburg (November 2025). They will also assess ongoing cooperation in key sectors such as trade and investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research and innovation, and people-to-people relations.

Both leaders will discuss regional and global developments and participate in the India-Canada CEO Forum in New Delhi.

The Ministry stated that this visit is occurring at a crucial stage in normalizing India-Canada bilateral relations. The upcoming meeting will provide an opportunity to reaffirm a shared vision for positive momentum and forward-looking partnerships.

Before arriving in Mumbai, the Canadian Prime Minister’s office released a statement highlighting India as the world’s fastest-growing major economy and a significant hub for global trade and technology. In 2024, India was Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner in goods and services, with bilateral trade reaching $30.8 billion.

During a meeting at the G20 summit in Johannesburg last November, Prime Minister Modi and Carney discussed the goal of reaching $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Modi noted that there are extensive opportunities to strengthen trade and investment relations between India and Canada.

After the meeting, Modi posted on social media, “We have set a target of $50 billion for our bilateral trade by 2030. Canadian pension funds are also showing keen interest in Indian companies.”
