Washington, March 4: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada and India are establishing a new strategic partnership in key sectors such as energy, innovation, and artificial intelligence. This partnership reflects the growing economic cooperation between the two nations.
During a press conference in Sydney, Carney emphasized that the deepening ties with India are indicative of the changing global landscape and both countries’ ambitions to enhance their economic and technological relations. Just a day after concluding his historic visit to India, he stated, “Canada and India are creating a new strategic partnership in energy, talent, innovation, and artificial intelligence.”
Carney highlighted that a comprehensive economic agreement would play a central role in boosting bilateral trade. He remarked, “The foundation of this partnership is a new comprehensive economic partnership agreement, which we aim to finalize this year.”
The Canadian Prime Minister noted that significant commercial agreements had already been established prior to recent discussions in India. He mentioned, “We have secured over $5 billion in commercial agreements in India.”
He added that these agreements would enhance collaboration between Canadian and Indian businesses and attract investments in both countries. Carney stated, “These agreements will help double bilateral trade to over $70 billion by 2030.”
Energy cooperation is also a crucial aspect of this growing partnership, which includes collaboration in civilian nuclear energy. He explained, “The $2.6 billion uranium supply agreement with the Indian government will support India’s civilian nuclear energy program by providing clean, reliable baseload energy.”
Carney also emphasized the importance of collaboration in education and innovation. He noted, “We have launched the Canada-India Talent and Innovation Strategy, supported by 13 educational partnerships between our major universities.”
