Mumbai, March 12: The Mumbai Police have intensified their investigation into a death threat received by a builder in Versova. Mehul Mehta found a threatening letter along with a bullet in his car, prompting the Versova police to file a case against an unknown individual. The Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of the Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation.
The incident occurred on March 6 when Mehta arrived at his construction site near the Versova Metro Station in Andheri West. His private bodyguard, who has been with him for eight years, filed a complaint with the police. He reported that after Mehta entered the site, he returned to his car to collect a gift. The driver noticed something suspicious near the back license plate. Upon inspection, a white plastic packet was found hidden between the license plate and the trunk.
Upon opening the packet, a letter addressed to Mehul Mehta was discovered. The handwritten note contained a chilling message: “Mehta, change your ways, you don’t understand. Today it is outside, tomorrow it will be inside your chest. Allah Hafiz – Chhota Shakeel.” A bullet was attached to the note with tape.
The driver immediately informed Mehta, who then called the police. Officers arrived at the scene and documented the incident in the presence of two witnesses, seizing the envelope, note, and live bullet as evidence. According to police, the unknown individual placed the packet near the car before 2:15 PM.
An FIR has been registered against the unknown person at the Versova police station. The Mumbai Crime Branch’s Anti-Extortion Cell is now conducting a thorough investigation. Officials are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to identify the individual who issued the threat.
Police sources indicate that the builder has received similar threats in the past, allegedly linked to the underworld. This latest threat may be connected to a significant redevelopment project in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Authorities are taking the matter seriously and claim they will apprehend the suspect soon. The Bombay High Court has also recently directed the restoration of police protection for the builder. This incident highlights the rising extortion activities in Mumbai.
