Mumbai, August 11: The BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave 2026 is taking place on August 11 and 12 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Mumbai. This event is organized by ‘Mumbai First’ in collaboration with both the central and state governments.
Representatives from 15 cities across BRICS and partner countries are participating in the conference. The main focus is on sustainable urban development. Maharashtra Governor Jagdish Mukhi and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde are also in attendance.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed pride in the commencement of the BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave in Mumbai. He thanked ‘Mumbai First’ for their efforts. He emphasized that cities are not merely structures of brick and concrete; they are the ‘engines of growth’ for the nation’s economic progress. Urbanization should be viewed not as a problem but as a significant opportunity. The challenges cities face today are similar, necessitating solutions that transcend borders. To create citizen-centric cities in the 21st century through resilience, innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, cities in BRICS nations must share their experiences, technologies, and innovations with one another.
The conference is addressing several critical issues related to urban development, including climate resilience and adaptation in coastal areas, urban mobility and public transport, digital transformation in governance, and cooperation between cities in BRICS and partner countries.
Urbanization in BRICS nations has surged, making cities key drivers of economic development. However, this growth has also brought challenges such as climate risks, infrastructure pressure, inequality, and governance issues. In light of these shared challenges, there is a pressing need for a collaborative platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and partnership building. The BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave 2026, organized by ‘Mumbai First’ with the support of the Maharashtra and Indian governments, aims to address these needs.
