Blundell and Phillips Shine as New Zealand Posts 291 Runs on Day One of Second Test

New Delhi, June 18: The second Test match between New Zealand and England is underway at The Oval in London. By the end of the first day’s play, New Zealand had scored 291 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their first innings.

England won the toss and opted to have New Zealand bat first. The Kiwi team struggled initially, with Devon Conway dismissed for just 9 runs. Captain Tom Latham failed to capitalize on a good start, getting out for 27 runs after facing 75 balls. Henry Nicholls was sent back to the pavilion by Josh Tongue at a score of 24. Rachin Ravindra also fell for 33 runs off 51 balls. After losing four wickets for just 107 runs, Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell formed a crucial partnership, adding 81 runs for the fifth wicket.

Sunny Baker broke this partnership by dismissing Daryl Mitchell for 44 runs. However, Blundell then teamed up with Glenn Phillips to add 75 runs for the sixth wicket in just 89 balls. Blundell scored 51 runs off 84 balls, hitting 6 boundaries, while Phillips remained unbeaten on 49 runs from 74 balls, including 9 fours. Nathan Smith managed only 4 runs, and Kyle Jamieson is not out on 6 runs.

In England’s bowling attack, Sunny Baker took 2 wickets for 63 runs, while Jack Leach also claimed 2 wickets for just 8 runs. Jofra Archer, Matthew Fisher, and Josh Tongue each took one wicket. Joe Root is leading the England team in this match, as Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gut Atkinson were not selected due to an ongoing nightclub controversy. Additionally, Ollie Robinson is absent due to injury, allowing Jofra Archer to take his place in the squad.
