Shimla, May 18: Former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur expressed gratitude to the people of Himachal Pradesh for the BJP’s impressive victory in the local body elections on Monday. He stated that these results reflect the public’s rejection of the alleged failures, corruption, chaos, and mafia rule under Chief Minister Sukhu’s Congress government.
Celebrating the win with party officials and workers at the BJP headquarters, Thakur claimed that the citizens are fed up with the government’s false promises, anti-people decisions, and misgovernance.
He noted that law and order in the state is deteriorating, with mafia elements receiving protection and corruption hollowing out the administrative structure. The results of the local body elections have demonstrated that the public is determined to oust the Congress government from power.
Thakur accused the Chief Minister of being deceitful, suggesting that even his own ministers do not trust him. He argued that the Chief Minister was aware of the potential election outcomes, which is why he avoided voting. Now, disturbed by the results, he is speaking like Mamata Banerjee. The Chief Minister must accept the mandate received today, as well as any future mandates.
On Sunday, voter turnout reached 69.16% in the elections for 51 urban local bodies (ULBs), including four municipal corporations across 10 out of 12 districts. Hamirpur district recorded the highest turnout at nearly 78%, while Solan district had the lowest at 64%. Of the 51 ULBs, results for 25 municipal councils and 22 nagar panchayats were announced, which were not contested under party symbols.
BJP-backed candidates won in 20 local bodies, while Congress secured 17, independent candidates won five, and the status in five remains uncertain. Independent candidates are expected to play a crucial role in the elections for chairpersons and vice-chairpersons. The results for the four municipal corporations—Dharamshala, Palampur, Mandi, and Solan—will be announced on May 31.
Contrary to BJP’s claims, Congress asserted that its supported candidates won in 31 out of 47 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. Congress organizational secretary Vinod Jinta stated that party-supported candidates achieved significant victories in Kangra and Chamba districts, while in Shimla and Sirmaur, they won more seats than BJP candidates.
Reacting to the results, Thakur emphasized that this victory is not just an electoral success for the BJP but also a symbol of public trust in the party and deep anger against the Congress government. The public has completely rejected the Chief Minister’s politics of lies, deceit, and propaganda.
