BJPs Kailash Vijayvargiya Hints at Third Candidate in Upcoming Rajya Sabha Elections

Bhopal, June 5: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Madhya Pradesh’s Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya stirred speculation regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections on Friday. He stated that if the central leadership decides to field a third candidate, the ruling party could ensure their victory.

This statement came a day after the BJP announced national general secretary Tarun Chugh and senior state leader Rajneesh Agrawal as candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18. Meanwhile, the Congress party has nominated former Lok Sabha MP and Congress Working Committee member Meenakshi Natarajan as its candidate.

Speaking to reporters in Indore, Vijayvargiya expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership for selecting candidates and noted that the national leadership has chosen two excellent candidates. He remarked, “Both are certain to win, but if the party decides on a third candidate, we will ensure their victory as well.”

He emphasized that both leaders have worked behind the scenes for many years for the organization, and their nominations are a recognition of their contributions.

Vijayvargiya’s comments have drawn attention to the strength of political parties in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly. A total of 58 MLAs are required to secure one Rajya Sabha seat. The BJP holds 165 seats, leaving them with 49 additional votes that could be utilized for a third candidate.

The Congress has an effective strength of 62 MLAs, which is four more than the number needed to send Meenakshi Natarajan to the Rajya Sabha. However, if 10 Congress MLAs’ votes are declared invalid or if they abstain from voting, the BJP’s third candidate could emerge victorious. One seat in the Assembly is held by the Indian Tribal Party.

Political analysts believe that Vijayvargiya’s statement indicates that the BJP is keeping its options open, even though current figures suggest victories for two BJP candidates and one from Congress. If the BJP fields a third candidate, the election could become more competitive, with additional votes, abstentions, and preferential vote transfers playing crucial roles.
