BJPs Government in West Bengal: A Question of Legitimacy, Says Mohammad Javed

New Delhi, May 9: Following a significant victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Suvendu Adhikari took the oath of office as Chief Minister on Saturday. This marks the first time the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed a government in Bengal. However, Congress MP Mohammad Javed raised serious concerns about the legitimacy of this government, claiming it was not legitimately formed but rather imposed.

Javed remarked, “Did this government come into power legitimately, or was it forced? When 9.1 million voters were disenfranchised, the entire strength of the country was deployed there, and people were intimidated and prevented from voting properly, the issue is not whether the government was formed or not. The real discussion should focus on how such events can occur in a democracy and why everyone, from the Supreme Court to others, remains silent on this matter.”

He also referenced the political situation in Tamil Nadu, stating that conditions there are not much different. According to him, the party with the most seats should be invited to form the government as per constitutional norms. However, he noted that questions are being raised about the governor’s role in some areas. He accused certain parties of not adhering to rules properly, which leads to political disputes.

Javed emphasized that the Congress party consistently supports those who uphold democratic values. He stated that support is provided where necessary to advance the government formation process, but this must occur within the framework of the Constitution.

Discussing Bihar’s political landscape and its cabinet, he pointed out that sometimes individuals with little experience are given responsibilities. He stressed the importance of experience and understanding in politics to effectively address the public’s issues.

“I have not analyzed this team. It includes several individuals with no political experience, and there are doubts about their capabilities. Many leaders have been given opportunities, but we have observed over the years that the BJP can do anything. A person who has been elected as an MLA, with no experience even managing a ward, is directly made Chief Minister. Ministers have also been appointed without adequate qualifications,” he added.

Javed criticized the BJP for often diverting attention from pressing issues to focus on religion and communal politics. He noted that the problems faced by farmers, youth, and the general populace do not receive the attention they deserve.
