New Delhi: BJP MPs have welcomed the Supreme Court‘s decision to stay the new University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. Union Minister Giriraj Singh described the ruling as a significant step towards preserving India’s cultural unity and ancient values. Meanwhile, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey criticised opposition parties for their silence on the matter.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh expressed his gratitude for the Supreme Court‘s intervention against the UGC rules, which he said were divisive of Sanatan Dharma. On the social media platform X, he stated, “This decision is crucial for protecting India’s cultural unity and Sanatan values. The Modi Government stands for inclusive development and the unbroken unity of Sanatan.”
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey took to X to question why no opposition party members found it appropriate to discuss the issue in Parliament. He pointed out, “Despite attending Parliament for the last two days, I have not seen any member from opposition parties address this. Instead, they are criticising the government that, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, provided 10% EWS reservation to support the poor.”
Dubey further appealed to the public to trust Prime Minister Modi and assured that the country’s laws would continue to be governed under Articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution. He added, “The Supreme Court has acted exactly as I had suggested.”
On Thursday, the Supreme Court heard petitions challenging the new UGC regulations and issued notices to the central government and UGC. The court imposed a stay on the new rules and clarified that the 2012 UGC regulations will remain in force until the next hearing scheduled for 19 March.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, observed that certain terms used in the new regulations raised concerns about potential misuse. Chief Justice Suryakant noted the possibility of abuse based on the language of the regulations, while Justice Bagchi emphasised the court’s intent to ensure a fair and inclusive environment in society.
