Pune, February 20: BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha on Friday. He accused Congress of worsening the economic situation in states and increasing the tax burden on the public.

Criticizing Gandhi’s “Khatakhat Model,” Poonawala stated that before coming to power, grand promises are made, such as free electricity and assurances of ₹1,500 for women. However, once in power, they create an economic crisis.

He claimed that Himachal Pradesh has been burdened with heavy debt, leading to taxes on petrol, diesel, electricity, sanitation, goods, fairs, and even entry fees.

Poonawala alleged that Congress should change its name to “I Need Corruption and Commission.” He asserted that a significant scam worth ₹37,000 crore has emerged, where contractors claim their payments are being withheld due to demands for commissions and bribes from Congress ministers.

He also accused a Congress minister in Karnataka of admitting that corruption cannot be stopped and is their “birthright.” Poonawala emphasized that such statements and allegations go against the principles of democratic governance and good administration.

In response to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor praising the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Poonawala remarked, “Congress leaders are exposing Rahul Gandhi‘s lies themselves. Last time, during Operation Sindoor, Rahul spread falsehoods claiming India had surrendered. Shashi Tharoor addressed Rahul Gandhi‘s false claims with an ‘India First’ approach.”

Earlier, on February 15, Poonawala made sharp comments about Congress leadership, sarcastically noting that while the country has mobile and automobile factories, Congress operates a “factory of lies,” with Rahul Gandhi being the “Prince of Liars.” He stated that lying has become second nature for Gandhi.
