
Gandhinagar, April 28: The counting of votes for local body elections in Gujarat is underway at various centers. Initial results indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is showing a significant lead in both urban and rural bodies.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, State BJP President Jagdish Vishwakarma, and party organizational leader Ratnakarji are closely monitoring the results as counting progresses.
In the early results, the BJP has won the Vapi Municipal Corporation elections, surpassing the majority mark significantly during the ongoing counting.
The party has also secured all 24 seats in the Bayad municipality, with 18 candidates elected unopposed and six through voting.
In the Una municipality, the BJP crossed the majority mark in the 36-seat body, winning eight seats unopposed and 16 through elections, while the opposition has yet to secure any seats.
BJP candidate Rajal Barot, daughter of the late folk singer Maniraj Barot, is among the elected representatives.
The BJP also achieved a majority in the Padra municipality, winning 11 out of 28 seats unopposed and five through voting, while the Congress managed to secure two seats.
By midday, trends indicated that the BJP had won 573 seats in taluka panchayats, while the Congress garnered 95 and others received 40 seats. In district panchayats, the BJP won 127 seats, with Congress claiming nine and others four.
In municipal corporations, the BJP secured 580 seats, the Congress 55, and others 31. So far, the BJP has won 118 seats in municipal corporations, including 43 unopposed, while the Congress has won seven, all from Vapi.
These elections, held on April 26, included 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats.
According to the State Election Commission, voter turnout was 49.02% in municipal corporations, 59.50% in municipalities, 61.69% in district panchayats, and 62.38% in taluka panchayats. Additionally, by-elections for 13 seats in municipalities recorded a turnout of 55.38%.
Counting of votes continues at designated centers across the state, with further results expected later in the day.
