Kolkata, August 17: Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) visited the family of former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Ashish Banerjee on Monday. Banerjee was found dead at his home in Birbhum district on Sunday morning, with a suicide note discovered at the scene.
Ashish Banerjee previously served as the Agriculture Minister in the Mamata Banerjee government and held the position of Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly.
On Monday, a forensic team examined his residence, collecting samples from the room where his body was found. The area has been sealed off, and no one is allowed to enter.
According to district police sources, the preliminary autopsy report suggests a likelihood of suicide. However, no official statement has been released by the investigating agencies yet. The police are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
BJP leaders, including Birbhum district president Uday Shankar Banerjee, Rampurhat MLA Dhruv Saha, Santhia MLA Krishna Kanta Saha, and Rashmi Dey, president of the Birbhum district women’s wing, visited the deceased leader’s home to meet with his family.
The BJP leaders spoke with Ashish Banerjee’s son, Shatadal Banerjee, and later met with his wife and other relatives, expressing their condolences over the loss of the senior TMC leader.
Dhruv Saha, who defeated Ashish Banerjee in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, also expressed his sympathies to the family and assured them of his support. Notably, Ashish Banerjee was a college teacher by profession, and Dhruv Saha was one of his students.
Meanwhile, forensic experts left the sealed room after collecting necessary samples, without addressing any media inquiries.
