Residents Protest Poor Sewage and Civic Amenities in Chennai

Chennai, August 17: Over 60 women protested outside the office of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Perambur on Monday. They demanded immediate action to improve sewage facilities and other infrastructure in Kodungaiyur.

CM Vijay represents the Perambur assembly constituency, with his office located on First Street in Sharm Nagar, Vyasarpadi. This office was established to address residents’ complaints and provide solutions. The government also launched a mobile app, allowing residents to submit their grievances directly to the chief minister’s office at any time. A dedicated team of ten staff members works daily to address these complaints.

Despite the complaint resolution system, residents of Vedanta Murugappa Street in Kodungaiyur claim that their repeated complaints about sewage flowing on the road have gone unanswered. They stated that poor sanitation and lack of essential civic amenities have caused significant distress for families in the area.

The women gathered outside the office and surrounded the premises, demanding that officials promptly repair the underground drainage system and stop sewage from flowing onto the streets.

Protesters accused officials of being indifferent to their complaints, attributing the lack of infrastructure work to an ongoing court case. They questioned why basic sanitation and public health facilities could not be provided until the legal dispute was resolved.

They also reminded that the ruling party had promised to address long-standing civic issues upon coming to power. Despite submitting requests at the Perambur MLA office after the government took office, they claimed no effective steps have been taken.

Tensions escalated during the protest when representatives from the ruling party and police officers arrived to speak with the women. Protesters posed several questions regarding the delay in resolving the sewage issue and demanded a clear timeline for the work.

Ultimately, representatives assured residents that immediate steps would be taken to provide necessary civic amenities and resolve sanitation issues. Following this assurance, the women decided to withdraw their protest. Police remained deployed around the MLA office until the crowd dispersed and the situation returned to normal.
