Cultural Exchange Flourishes Between American and Chinese Youth in Shigatse

Beijing, August 17: A 22-member delegation from an artistic gymnastics and dance academy in Oregon, USA, visited Shigatse, located in southwestern China, from August 14 to 19.

During their stay, the delegation engaged in cultural exchanges with local artists, athletes, and residents. They also toured significant sites such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Shigatse University.

On August 15, the delegation arrived at the Shigatse Youth Practice Base, where they collaborated with students in playing musical instruments, learning Tibetan script, and exchanging gifts. Later, they visited the Shigatse Autonomous Region’s Chinese National Shared Identity Youth Theme Museum, where young guides narrated the region’s development and the stories of cultural exchanges among various ethnic groups through historical photographs.

An American student expressed that he had little knowledge about Shigatse before the visit but was able to closely observe the diversity of its culture. Another student, Chloe, noted that both sides were expressing their cultures through dance. In the Tibetan script class, American students attempted to write characters using bamboo pens. Chloe remarked, “It’s wonderful! They wrote beautifully. These classes showcase the unique talents of the local children.”

During the event, the Snow Lotus Children’s Art Troupe from the Shigatse Youth Palace performed traditional dances and Tibetan opera. In response, the American delegation showcased artistic gymnastics, which was well-received by local children.

American student Samantha shared, “I really liked the culture here. Understanding how they live makes me realize how important culture is to them.” She added that upon returning to the USA, she would definitely share her amazing experiences in Shigatse with her friends.
