BJP Leader Rakesh Singh Arrested

Kolkata, 3 September (Kiran News): Kolkata Police have arrested BJP leader Rakesh Singh, who had been absconding in connection with the vandalism at the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) headquarters. Singh was apprehended early Wednesday morning from a flat in the Tangra area near EM Bypass. He will be produced before the Sealdah court, where police are expected to seek his custody.

According to police sources, Singh was arrested around 2 a.m. based on a tip-off. While being taken away in the police van, he was seen shouting slogans in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and declared, “Rakesh Singh is not afraid of anyone.”

On 29 August, under Rakesh Singh’s leadership, BJP workers allegedly vandalised the Congress state headquarters in Kolkata. Posters, including those of Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders, were torn and damaged, and party flags were set on fire. The protest was reportedly in response to comments made by Rahul Gandhi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar.

Since the incident, Singh had been evading arrest, though he remained active on social media, making statements against the police. Earlier, police had arrested his son, Shivam Singh, on charges of aiding his father’s evasion. After Shivam’s arrest, Rakesh Singh took to social media to accuse police of harassing his family.

Police have already arrested three other accused—Vijay Prasad Dhanuk, Santosh Kumar Rajbhar, and Divyendu Samanta—based on the FIR filed by the Congress party. On Saturday, police had visited Singh’s residence for investigation, but he was not found at home.
