Agartala, March 24: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its list of candidates for the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, just a day after Tipra Motha Party (TMP) leader Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma announced that his party would not enter into any alliances.
Voting for the politically significant 30-member TTAADC is scheduled for April 12, with the counting of votes set for April 17. The TTAADC is considered the second most important constitutional body in the state after the Tripura Legislative Assembly, comprising 28 elected members and two nominated by the state government. Tripura BJP President Rajiv Bhattacharya stated that the party will contest all 28 seats.
Bhattacharya, a member of the Rajya Sabha, informed the media that the BJP currently has nine members in the TTAADC, with seven being re-nominated to run for election. Several senior tribal leaders from the party, including State General Secretary Bipin Debbarma, are among the candidates.
He further emphasized that if the BJP comes to power in the TTAADC, it will ensure effective and transparent governance aimed at the holistic development of the tribal population, which constitutes nearly one-third of Tripura’s total population of approximately 4.2 million.
The media briefing was attended by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Finance Minister Pranjit Singh Roy, and various other BJP leaders. Just before the announcement of the BJP candidates, two key TMP leaders, Anant Debbarma and Swadgar Kalai, joined the BJP and were nominated as candidates for the elections.
Meanwhile, TMP founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma firmly rejected any alliance with the BJP for the TTAADC elections. In a video message from New Delhi, the former royal descendant stated that there would be no electoral agreement without clear progress on the tripartite agreement signed two years ago.
Leaders from both the BJP and TMP had previously indicated that central leadership from both parties had held several meetings in New Delhi recently to discuss potential arrangements for seat sharing. TMP leader and MLA Ranjit Debbarma also mentioned that the party president was engaged in discussions with BJP leaders in the national capital to finalize this arrangement.
Maintaining a firm and resolute stance, Debbarma reiterated that he would neither compromise nor yield to pressure, emphasizing that his commitment lies entirely with the indigenous people.
