Katihar, June 7: Bihar has marked nearly a decade since the implementation of its complete alcohol ban. The state government has consistently touted this as a significant achievement. However, recent images from Katihar district raise serious questions about the effectiveness of this ban. Reports indicate that illegal sales of country liquor are occurring openly along the banks of the Kosi River, with a video of the situation going viral on social media.
The viral footage claims that a regular market for country liquor has emerged along the river, attracting large crowds who purchase and consume alcohol. Alarmingly, many young individuals appear to be partaking in this illicit activity.
Local residents report that numerous youths spend time near the Kosi River after drinking, raising concerns about potential accidents. Despite this ongoing illegal trade, it has been suggested that it has been allowed to continue for a considerable time.
This situation has prompted scrutiny of the district administration and local police. The open sale of alcohol in public areas like the Kosi embankment has led to questions about why the authorities have not intervened. Residents are left wondering if this is merely negligence or if there are other underlying reasons.
In response to the situation, Subhash Kumar Singh, the superintendent of the excise department, expressed his disapproval. He stated, “This is very wrong. The sale of alcohol is unacceptable from both social and moral perspectives.”
Singh noted, “I learned about this issue through your report today. We will take immediate action. A team will be dispatched within the next two to three days to investigate and conduct an operation. Those found involved in selling alcohol will be arrested. We will strive to prevent such incidents from happening again.”
