Bihar Police Officer Arrested for Taking Bribe in Begusarai

Begusarai, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : The Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) has made a significant move against corruption by arresting an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in Begusarai district. On Monday, the officer, identified as Chandan Jha, was caught accepting a bribe of ₹29,000 at the Sahibpur Kamal police station.

The arrest occurred during a covert operation conducted by the VIB team from Patna, near the block headquarters. The action was prompted by a complaint from Amit Kumar, a local resident, who alleged that Jha demanded money in exchange for removing his name from a criminal case.

Following the complaint, the VIB conducted a preliminary verification of the allegations. Once the demand for the bribe was confirmed, a case was registered at the vigilance police station (Case No. 127/26). The operation was executed on Monday, leading to Jha’s immediate arrest as he allegedly accepted the ₹29,000 from Kumar.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gautam Sharan, the ASI initially asked for ₹30,000, but negotiations brought the amount down to ₹29,000. The full amount was recovered during the operation.

The case revolves around a four-wheeler owned by Kumar, which Jha claimed to have sold. However, the vehicle was later seized in connection with a liquor smuggling case. Jha allegedly sought the bribe to remove Kumar’s name from the investigation related to the smuggling.

After the arrest, the vigilance team took Jha to the Begusarai circuit house for necessary legal formalities before arranging for him to be taken to Patna for further legal proceedings. This incident has once again brought the issue of corruption within the police department into the spotlight. The vigilance department reiterated its commitment to taking action against public servants involved in bribery, while the investigation continues.
