Patna, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Tejashwi Yadav, the national executive president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to visit Bihar amid the ongoing flood crisis. He is advocating for the floods to be declared a “national disaster” and has requested immediate financial assistance of ₹5,000 crore from the central government.
In his letter, Yadav highlighted the severe impact of the floods, which have affected 20 districts and millions of residents. He noted that rising water levels in rivers have caused significant damage to public infrastructure, resulting in losses amounting to thousands of crores. Many people are struggling to access basic necessities such as food, clean drinking water, medicine, electricity, and safe transportation.
Yadav criticized the Bihar government‘s relief efforts, claiming they are inadequate to address the scale of the disaster. He accused the NDA’s elected ministers and MPs from Bihar of failing to effectively communicate the state’s needs to the central government during this crisis.
He emphasized that the flooding is not merely a natural disaster but also a consequence of years of failures in disaster management and preparedness. Despite annual flooding, he argued that necessary long-term solutions have not been implemented. Yadav reiterated his call for immediate financial support and a special flood relief package. He also urged the government to provide additional boats and resources to areas cut off from road access, as well as to ensure the involvement of the army and air force helicopters in rescue operations.
Moreover, he demanded a thorough review of Bihar’s financial and disaster management readiness, including an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). Yadav pointed out that due to the state’s geographical features, large areas are prone to flooding. He proposed the initiation of a long-term “Flood Resilience Mission” to include effective river and embankment management, drainage systems, reservoir rehabilitation, and collaboration with neighboring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh for improved water management.
In closing, Yadav stressed the urgent need to prioritize the safety of Bihar’s citizens. He urged the Prime Minister to avoid any neglect towards Bihar and to provide immediate special central assistance as a humanitarian and national obligation.
