Benny Dayal: From Rejection to Stardom with A.R. Rahmans Support

Mumbai, May 13: Benny Dayal’s voice captivates hearts and inspires joy. However, his journey to fame was fraught with challenges. Once, a music director bluntly told him, “Your voice is not fit for singing.” But then, A.R. Rahman entered his life, changing everything.

Born on May 13, 1984, in Abu Dhabi, Benny’s childhood was steeped in dance. He trained in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Mohiniyattam for 14 years and also learned Carnatic music. Despite his talent, he never dreamed of becoming a singer. In school, he was known for winning dance competitions.

One day, someone heard him sing and remarked that he sang even better than he danced. This compliment sparked a new thought in him. His life took a turn when he listened to a song from the film “Dil Se.” He decided that music would be his future.

After finishing school, Benny wanted to move to Chennai, but his father insisted he study in Pune. For two months, they remained silent on the matter. Eventually, it was decided that he would complete his education first. In college, Benny formed a band and explored various music genres. However, the path to a professional career was not easy. He traveled to different places, seeking opportunities to sing in choirs, but faced constant rejection. One music director even told him his voice was unfit for singing. Faced with financial struggles, his father’s illness, and family responsibilities, Benny felt defeated. Following a senior’s advice, he took an HR job at a BPO.

Yet, fate had other plans. On his first day at work, Benny received a call from A.R. Rahman. Rahman had heard a religious song sung by Benny and liked his voice. In 2008, Benny got his big break with the song “Chinnamma Chilkamma” for the Tamil film “Sakkarakatti.” This opportunity not only established him in South Indian cinema but also introduced him to the Hindi film industry. The song “Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gayi” from the film “Ghajini” became a massive hit, giving Benny the recognition he deserved.

Benny Dayal has sung in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, and Marathi. He can also sing in French and Arabic. Working with renowned composers like Himesh Reshammiya, Pritam, Salim-Sulaiman, and Amit Trivedi, Benny admits that he still feels uncertain before each recording, wondering if his voice is suitable for the song. He pours his heart into music, holding no grudges.

In 2016, Benny married model Catherine Thangam. He also creates independent music and performs live both nationally and internationally.
