Colombo, August 23: The second Test match between India and Sri Lanka is currently underway at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. India won the toss and opted to bat first. However, when the playing XI was announced, Kuldeep Yadav’s name was notably absent. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided an explanation for his exclusion from the Colombo Test.
The BCCI stated on X, “Kuldeep Yadav has not fully recovered from his viral illness. He was not available for selection in the playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka. However, he could come onto the field as a concussion substitute if needed.”
Indian captain Shubman Gill also mentioned Kuldeep’s illness at the toss. He noted that unfortunately, Kuldeep had contracted an infection, which prevented him from participating in this match.
Kuldeep was part of the Galle Test, where he managed to take just one wicket. There were speculations that he might be sidelined for the Colombo Test, potentially allowing off-spinner Saransh Jain a chance to play. However, the BCCI clarified that Kuldeep’s illness was the reason for his absence from the playing XI.
In Kuldeep’s place, the Indian team management has given an opportunity to all-rounder Saransh Jain for the Colombo Test. Saransh is making his international debut in this match. At 33 years old, he has been a significant part of domestic cricket, contributing to Madhya Pradesh‘s first Ranji Trophy title. Expectations are high for Saransh to deliver impressive performances with both bat and ball. He is a left-handed batsman and bowls right-arm off-spin.
