Nishio, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : Lovlina Borgohain triumphed at the Asian Games 2026, securing a gold medal in the 75 kg final after defeating China’s Jia Yi Bao with a unanimous score of 5-0. The victory is particularly special for Borgohain as it coincides with her 29th birthday. She has now become the second female boxer, following Mary Kom, to win gold at the Asian Games.
In a post-match interview, Borgohain expressed her joy, stating, “I feel great. I thought I should gift myself a gold medal on my birthday. I didn’t think about losing for even a second. It was a tough fight, but I was always focused on winning.”
Reflecting on her journey, she noted that after winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, she experienced a mix of emotions as an athlete, facing losses and injuries. “This gold medal was crucial for me,” she added.
Borgohain initially secured a narrow victory in the first round, winning 3-2, but then dominated the subsequent rounds with scores of 4-1. Despite her lead, she remained cautious in the final round, acknowledging the strength of her opponent. “The last round was very challenging. I was playing against someone strong for the first time, so I had no idea how she would play. I kept motivating myself to win, no matter what,” she said.
She emphasized her determination, stating, “I came here to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. I motivated myself to stay strong and positive. Japan is very lucky for me. I kept thinking about it. It was my birthday, and I won the fight. It was tough, but I achieved victory with strength.”
Previously, Borgohain earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. She concluded her remarks by sharing her excitement about the win, saying, “I feel amazing. I don’t know how to celebrate my gold yet. It just happened, and I need some time to accept that I won.”
