Mumbai, March 25: Immigration officials at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport apprehended a Bangladeshi national attempting to flee the country using a counterfeit Indian passport.
According to police reports, the incident occurred early Wednesday at around 4:15 AM, while immigration officer Ganesh Gawli was on duty. A passenger approached the counter for inspection. Initially, the documents appeared normal, but a thorough examination raised suspicions. The traveler possessed an Indian passport listing an address in Kolkata, yet his mobile number displayed a Bangladesh country code. This discrepancy prompted further investigation, leading to his referral to senior officials.
During rigorous questioning, the suspect revealed his true identity. He identified himself as Sukanta Mallik, 39, a resident of Gopalganj district in Bangladesh. He admitted to illegally entering India in 2012 and obtaining a fake Indian passport in 2022 using forged documents. Additionally, he acquired several government IDs, including a PAN card, voter ID, and ration card through fraudulent means.
The investigation also revealed that the suspect was preparing to board flight TC-401 to Dar es Salaam, Congo, intending to settle abroad under a false identity. Immigration officials confiscated various crucial documents from him, including the fake Indian passport, boarding pass, PAN card, voter ID, ration card, a birth certificate from Bangladesh, his mother’s passport, and a mobile phone.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may not be acting alone, indicating the possible involvement of an organized gang engaged in creating fake documents to facilitate illegal immigration and settlement abroad. The suspect has been handed over to Sahar police for further action, facing serious charges including fraud, forgery, and illegal residency in India.
