Dhaka, January 8 – Bangladesh experienced a significant increase in crime rates during 2025, with women and children bearing the brunt of the violence. Incidents of murder, robbery, and mob lynching also rose sharply amid ongoing political instability, according to local media reports published on Thursday.
Experts attribute the surge in crime to challenges in maintaining law and order. The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has struggled to restore a stable environment following recent political upheavals.
Referring to police data, the Bangla daily ‘Bonik Barta’ reported that a total of 1,81,737 cases were registered in 2025, including some related to incidents from 2024. The majority of these cases involved violence against women and children.
Police records indicate that last year, 21,936 cases of violence targeting women and children were reported across the country. Theft cases numbered 12,740, while murder cases reached 3,785.
Robbery incidents also increased, with 1,935 cases registered. Other recorded offenses include 702 loot cases, 988 under the Speedy Trial Act, 66 riots, 1,101 kidnappings, 601 attacks on police, and 81,738 cases in various other categories.
The murder of four-and-a-half-year-old Roja Mani triggered widespread protests throughout Bangladesh. Her body was found on 13 May 2025 near a garbage heap by the Bijoy Sarani overpass in Tejkunipara, having gone missing the previous day from Dhaka’s Tejgaon area.
Besides the Roja Mani case, the capital witnessed at least 1,000 reported incidents of child abuse last year. Similar cases were also reported from educational institutions and workplaces nationwide.
Associate Professor and criminologist Towhidul Haque from Dhaka University’s Institute of Social Welfare and Research told Bonik Barta, “The crime data for 2025 reveals alarming trends. The law and order situation has not fully stabilised, leading to a rise in criminal activities. Women and children have suffered the most.”
He further explained, “The deterioration of law and order following political changes has disproportionately impacted vulnerable groups. Serious crimes such as targeted killings and mob lynching remain a critical concern. To improve the situation, strict enforcement of laws is essential.”
Since the interim government under Yunus assumed power, Bangladesh has been grappling with escalating violence and deteriorating public safety conditions.
