Dhaka, June 20: Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman is preparing for his first foreign visit since taking office, heading to Malaysia and China. The announcement was made by the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry on Saturday.
According to the government news agency BSS, Rahman will depart for Malaysia on Sunday, followed by a trip to China the next day. Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam shared these details during a media briefing.
Siam noted that discussions in Beijing will focus on trade and infrastructure projects. During this visit, it is expected that between 15 to 17 bilateral agreements will be signed between Bangladesh and China. This includes 13 memoranda of understanding (MOUs), two agreements, one action plan, and one protocol.
Prime Minister Rahman will leave for Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday afternoon, responding to an invitation from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He will then travel to China on Monday afternoon at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Siam stated, “This is the Prime Minister’s first foreign trip since the government took office in February.” He also mentioned that the delegations accompanying the Prime Minister to both Malaysia and China will be relatively small, comprising about 27 to 28 members.
He told reporters, “We have tried to keep it at a reasonable level.”
According to BSS, these visits are seen as a significant diplomatic initiative aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s economic partnerships. Siam added that the focus of the visit to Malaysia will also be on enhancing trade and bilateral relations. It is estimated that around 800,000 Bangladeshi workers reside in Malaysia, making up more than a third of the country’s total foreign workforce.
